Western Canadians Cooling On Separation
While many believe they'd be better off on their own, support for leaving remains low
Newly released polling from Environics suggests Canadians in the West show little desire to leave Canada and strike out on their own. In fact, negative sentiments toward Canada in the West have declined compared to previous years.
The survey asked people in the West whether they agree with the idea that western Canada gets so few benefits from being part of Canada that they might as well go it on their own.
Back in 2019, this question found more than half of Albertans and Saskatchewanians in agreement, along with sizeable shares of British Columbians and Manitobans. Today, 48% of Saskatchewanians and 44% of Albertans still agree with that statement, as do 39% of British Columbians and 29% of Manitobans.
Should the western provinces form their own nation, or even join the United States? The survey suggests Canadians out west are not especially keen on either idea.
