Support For Canadian Nuclear Power Rises
63% of Canadians Now Support The Expansion of Nuclear Power In Canada, Up 12% In The Last Four Years
New data from the Angus Reid Institute suggests Canadians are increasingly supportive of nuclear power.
When asked whether they support expanding energy generation from nuclear power, 63% of Canadians said they support the notion. That support is up 6-points from three years earlier in 2022, and up 12-points from 2021.
Support for expanding nuclear power is highest in Saskatchewan (79%), Ontario (76%), and Alberta (74%). Interestingly, Alberta and Saskatchewan are two of Canada’s largest consumers of fossil fuels in their production of domestic energy, while Ontario is considered Canada’s nuclear powerhouse.
Support for expanding nuclear power generation is above 60% in Atlantic Canada, Manitoba, and British Columbia. The only province that continues to have a low opinion of nuclear is Quebec, where only 36% support expanding the production of it. That is still up 8-points since 2021, showing a small softening of anti-nuclear attitudes in the province.
