As the Russian three-day military operation rolls into its third year, the world is left wondering whether there’s an end to the conflict in sight. With Ukraine back in the news as of late, the Angus Reid Institute asked Canadians about the conflict at hand.

When asked who they thought was most responsible for starting the war back in 2022, 82% of Canadians lay the blame at the feet of the Russian government. More than 90% of past voters (Excluding Conservatives) agree that Russia is to blame for the war kicking off.

Meanwhile, 8% of Canadians, and 14% of previous Conservative voters, say that Ukraine was most responsible for the start of the war.

When the question of who is most responsible for the war lasting as long as it has is posed, a higher share of Conservatives (25%) pin the blame on Ukraine. In contrast, only 15% of Canadians blame Ukraine for the war lasting this long, with 73% instead blaming Russia.

Though, as the idea of a ceasefire arises in Ukraine, one has to wonder who folks believe will benefit most from the cessation of hostilities.
