Canadians Firmly Reject Idea of American Statehood
Support for American statehood remains low across all age groups, even in more conservative provinces like Alberta
Newly released polling from Ipsos suggests Canadians remain firmly opposed to the idea of joining the United States, despite continued concern about Trump’s remarks regarding Canadian sovereignty.
When asked if they would never vote for Canada to become part of the United States, an overwhelming majority (79%) agreed, while only 9% disagreed, indicating some openness to American statehood.
Opposition to joining the United States is highest among Baby Boomers (93%) and lowest among Millennials (69%), though strong majorities of both men and women oppose the idea.
Even in more conservative parts of the country, such as Alberta, only 11% say they disagree with opposition to joining the United States, suggesting little appetite for statehood even in areas seen as the most America-friendly.
Let’s dig further into the data.
