Canadians Accuse Israel of Genocide
New polling shows growing numbers across party lines believe Israel’s actions in Gaza constitute a genocide
New polling is shedding light on how Canadians are feeling about the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip, as well as the actions of the Israeli government under Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Angus Reid Institute found that 37% of Canadians say their sympathies rest more with the Palestinians, including 65% of New Democrats and 51% of Liberals.
On the other hand, only 19% of Canadians say their sympathies lie more with the Israelis. That view is held by 42% of Conservatives, compared to just 5% of Liberals and 3% of New Democrats.
Another 27% of respondents said their sympathies lie equally with both sides, while 17% said they were unsure.
Despite only 37% of respondents siding more with the Palestinians, a strong majority (61%) say that Canada should recognize a Palestinian state. In contrast, 39% say Canada should maintain the status quo and not take such action.
Canadians of all ages support the move. The idea of Palestinian statehood is most popular among New Democrats (89%) and Liberals (82%). Even one in three Conservative voters say Canada should recognize Palestine, although 68% disagree.
Now let’s look at how Canadians are feeling about Israeli actions against Palestinians, including actions that many say amount to genocide.
