Newly released polling from Research Co is shedding new light on Alberta separatist sentiment, and just how little appetite there is not only for leaving Canada, but also for joining the United States.

When Albertans were asked whether they support Alberta becoming an independent country from Canada, only 31% said they support the move, while a strong majority (62%) oppose such an idea.

Support for independence was highest among those living in rural Alberta at 34%, while those in Calgary and Edmonton lag behind at 31% and 29%, respectively.

The partisan divide between Conservative and New Democratic voters is also striking. Among 2023 UCP voters, 40% would support leaving Canada and becoming independent, while 56% oppose the move. On the flip side, just 11% of New Democratic voters support leaving, while an overwhelming majority (85%) oppose it.

Let’s dive deeper into the numbers and take a look at how these results break down on the riding by riding model.
